Trail Construction Updates

Please be advised that Oakland County Road Commission will begin a project to replace the bridge on Dutton Road, just east of the trail and along the trail parking lot, this July 2023. The project is estimated to continue through November 2023. During this time, the trailhead at this crossing will be closed at a future date to be announced. Any Dutton Road closures will leave the trail parking lot at this entrance inaccessible – plan to use the Silverbell Road or Tieken Road entrances instead. Please check the Oakland County Road Commission website for updates and details at www.rcocweb.org and keep an eye out for trail closure notices here or on our social media accounts.

Please be advised that Thursday, March 25, 2021, crews will be surveying and taking soil borings on the trail just north of the Royal Oak Archers site in Oakland Township. Temporary closures may occur as a result of this work. Please use caution in this area.

New!  July 25, 2018:  Bridge 33.7 Sinkhole Repair

Bridge 33.7 Update: Yesterday, we had a large sinkhole at the southern end of Bridge 33.7 on the Paint Creek Trail in Oakland Township. We contacted our engineers and provided them a photo of the sinkhole, and the measures that were taken to repair it.

Based on that information, they have advised that the hole is likely a result of water washing out the material under the timber wall at the southern abutment. The safest way to proceed is to not allow vehicular traffic over the bridge until further notice due to settlement and compaction concerns for the backfill material behind the abutment. Pedestrians and Cyclists can still cross the bridge safely. We ask that if you see any new sinkholes forming near that bridge, please contact the trail office immediately at 248-651-9260 and [email protected]

We have advised maintenance, fire department, EMS, and all Sheriff office personnel that they should NOT drive across the bridge under any circumstances. We will be putting up signs today, and ask that you please leave them in place.

We will keep you informed of any new developments.

May 14, 2018:  Bridge Construction – POSTPONED until 2019. Bad news for us, good news for trail users! Our bridge construction project and resurfacing is being postponed to early 2019. Bids came back way higher than our engineer’s estimate (38.4% higher). The trail will remain open.  The Trailways Commission and Parks Commission will meet with engineers soon to revise the project and scope to reduce the budget.  We’re hoping to re-bid in October, with construction to start in March 2019. Stay tuned!

April 16, 2018:  We have confirmed that the Bid Letting for the Bridge project will be on May 4, 2018.  That means a contractor will be chosen that day.  We do not know the exact date, but based on the bid letting date, the trail will most likely be closed sometime during the week of June 4, 2018.  We will post a definite date when we have one!

TRAIL IS OPEN – TREE REMOVAL WORK IS COMPLETE.

TRAIL CLOSURE REMINDER: The Paint Creek Trail will be closed between Dutton and Silver Bell all day on Thursday, March 22, and for half the day on Friday, March 23. Tree removal contractors will be on site removing trees in preparation for our Paint Creek Trail Bridge 33.7 replacement, tentatively scheduled to start in June 2018. Please plan your visit on Thursday and Friday accordingly.

Trail Closure Update: The Paint Creek Trail will be OPEN today and tomorrow. The tree removal work scheduled for today has been postponed until Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23. We will post a reminder later in the week.

Trail Closure Notice: The trail is tentatively scheduled to be closed to thru traffic at Bridge 33.7 (between Dutton and Silverbell) on Monday, March 19, 2018 and possibly Tuesday, March 20, 2018. A tree service company will be on site removing 22 trees near the bridge, in preparation for the bridge replacement in June. Please plan your visit to the trail accordingly. We will post more information as it becomes available.

*2018 Paint Creek Trail Construction and Closure Alert*

Paint Creek Trail is scheduled for two major construction projects in 2018.

Bridge 33.7, which is located on the trail between Dutton and Silver Bell Roads, is scheduled to be replaced.  This $750,000 project, which is being funded by a $300,0000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant, a $300,000 Federal Transportation Alternatives Program grant, and a $150,000 cash match from Oakland Township Parks and Recreation, is scheduled to start in late Spring or early Summer 2018.  The Paint Creek Trail will be completely closed to thru traffic for 60-90 days.  Unfortunately, there is no detour.  You will be able to use the trail from Rochester Municipal Park to Dutton Road, or Silver Bell Road to Children’s Park in Lake Orion. The one mile section between Dutton Road and Silver Bell Road will be completely closed during the bridge replacement. Please plan your visit to the Paint Creek Trail accordingly.  After the bridge is replaced, the Paint Creek Trail is tentatively scheduled to be re-surfaced with crushed limestone, from Rochester to Lake Orion, with rolling closures.  At this time, bridge construction is tentatively planned to start around June 1, 2018 and both projects will tentatively be completed by September 30, 2018. This schedule is tentative, and subject to change.
